John A. Hartford Helps Expand Program to Support Older Hospitalized Adults
A program at Highland Hospital catering to older adults hospitalized with hip fractures is slated to expand to hospitals across the nation, hospital officials said Monday.
The John A. Hartford Foundation of New York, the American Geriatrics Society and the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs are supporting the launch of the national program designed to replicate the local program.
The program’s premise is older adults hospitalized with hip fractures recover more successfully when orthopaedic surgeons and geriatricians care for them in collaboration, hospital officials said.
Daniel Mendelson M.D., associate chief of medicine at Highland Hospital and professor of medicine in the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry geriatrics division, and Richard Besdine M.D., principal investigator and a professor of medicine and public policy at Alpert Medical School and the School of Public Health of Brown University, are leading the project....
