Joan Mitchell Foundation Names Recipients of 2018 Painters & Sculptors Grants
The Joan Mitchell Foundation announced the 2018 recipients of its Painters & Sculptors grants, which will provide 25 artists with $25,000 each in unrestricted funds. This year, the foundation said, 70 percent of the grantees identify as female and approximately 80 percent as non-white.
Christa Blatchford, CEO of the Joan Mitchell Foundation, told ARTnews, “As demonstrated by the diversity of this group of grant recipients, we work with a spectrum of artists, whose practices, backgrounds, and careers vary widely, but we hear consistently that day-to-day financial support—the kind that rarely makes headlines—remains critical.”
Applicants are nominated by arts professionals and peers, then chosen through a private jury process. Once tapped, recipients are eligible to apply for residency at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. “Thanks to Mitchell’s vision and our own desire to continue to be responsive to artists’ most essential needs, we are committed to providing unrestricted funds and very much look forward to the ongoing success of our artist community,” Blatchford added...
