House Gives Approval to $36.5 Billion Disaster Aid Package
Despite opposition from conservative and government watchdog groups, the House easily approved a $36.5 billion disaster aid package Thursday to help states and U.S. territories rebuild in the wake of devastating hurricanes and wildfires.
The House passed the measure 353 to 69. It will go to the Senate, which is not in session until next week.
Republican leaders praised the move, saying the bill will help replenish federal disaster funds and jump start recovery efforts in states like Florida and Texas and U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
