Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Announces 2018 Clinical Scientist Development Award Recipients
The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2018 Clinical Scientist Development Awards.
Established in 1998, the program provides funding to physician-scientists who are one to five years into their first faculty appointment and ready to transition to an independent research career. Selected from a pool of two hundred and sixty-four applicants by review panels of distinguished scientists, the eighteen awardees will receive $495,000 each over three years to conduct research and establish a laboratory.
This is the second year in a row the foundation saw a roughly equal percentage of applications from men and women, following an internal review of the program that recommended the application process be made more gender-neutral. The final pool of grantees selected by the review panels also were split evenly between male and female physician-scientists.
"The Clinical Scientist Development Awards represent our flagship mechanism for fostering the careers of some of the most promising individuals in the biomedical research field today," said Betsy Myers, program director for medical research at DDCF. "This year's awarded scientists represent a vast range of expertise and approaches to improving patients' lives but have in common a commitment to improving human health now and in the long term. We are proud to support these physician scientists and excited to see how their careers unfold."
