Cuomo Administration Bullish On State Climate Action After RGGI Agreement
The head of the state Department of Environmental Conservation said there's a good chance the Northeast agreement between states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the power sector will expand after the members this week agreed to lower caps in future years.
The nine states that comprise the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative announced an agreement on Wednesday to reduce the amount of carbon allowances available by 3 percent annually starting in 2020, retire carbon allowances in the market and set a minimum price for carbon allowances. Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos said the agreement demonstrates that even with the federal inaction on climate change under President Donald Trump, states can still make an impact on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. . .
