City to Expand 3-K Program to 6 New Neighborhoods

City Hall on Thursday announced plans to expand its pre-K education program for 3-year-olds in six new neighborhoods over the next three years.

The free, full-day 3-K expansion comes in three phases, beginning with District 4, in East Harlem and District 7, in Queens, for the 2018-2019 school year.

In fall 2019, the program will come to District 9 in The Bronx and District 31 in Staten Island, followed by District 19 in East New York and District 29 in southeast Queens in September 2020.

The program is currently in its first year in District 7in the South Bronx and District 23 in Brownsville, at an operating cost of $36 million. Once all eight districts are running at full capacity in 2022, the operating cost will be $180 million annually, officials said...
