City Council Approves Zoning Plan to Revamp Far Rockaway with More Housing, Commercial Repairs

The City Council signed off on a zoning plan to revamp Far Rockaway with more housing and a commercial overhaul.

Mayor de Blasio pledged to rezone 15 neighborhoods under his affordable housing plan — but with months left in his first term, the Rockaway plan is only the second one to pass.

Some 3,000 new apartments are expected to be built under the deal — 1,700 of them at the site of a partially-abandoned mall, which will be redeveloped for housing and new stores. The city is set to spend $288 million in the neighborhood — building a new park, a library branch, and running a shuttle from downtown Far Rockaway to the city ferry stop. ...
