Bloomberg Fact Checks NYTimes on Climate Change
“Trump Using Detroit as Stage for Loosening Obama’s Fuel Economy Standards” (nytimes.com, March 15) repeated a fallacy that has become conventional wisdom. The article cited experts who claimed that policy rollbacks by the Trump administration “would make it impossible for the United States to meet Mr. Obama’s commitments under the 2015 Paris Agreement” on climate change.
In fact, thanks to the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign (which I have supported through my foundation), we have already achieved two-thirds of the emissions reductions envisioned by President Obama’s yet-to-be-implemented power plant regulations.
This success, combined with leadership from local and state governments (including on fuel efficiency and electric vehicles) and the rapidly advancing clean energy industry, are positioning the United States to achieve our Paris pledge even if Washington rolls back Obama-era regulations...
