Aetna Foundation Supports Bike Sharing Initiative
The North Wilkesboro-based Health Foundation Inc. has been awarded a $71,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation for a “North Wilkesboro on Wheels” bike-share program to improve local access to bicycles.
The $71,000 is a portion of $2.4 million awarded to 25 nonprofits across the nation as part of the Aetna Foundation’s Building Healthy Communities initiative. There were over 1,700 grant applicants.
The bike-share project is targeted to start later this year and end by August 2020. The goal is to reach over 4,200 people through the program.
The majority of the grant ($30,000) will be used to compensate the six teens and six adults on the design team who will be paid a stipend of $2,500 each to refine, prototype (similar to research and development), and test the bike-share concept over a nine-month period....
