Founded nearly three decades ago as a conference forum for spreading ideas, TED has since evolved and grown into an organization with worldwide media reach and ongoing initiatives in translation, education, science and the environment. The TED model mixing live events and media has been adapted by communities around the globe as a platform for gathering ideas, sharing local expertise and sparking change and advancement in both the developed and the developing worlds.

A rare mainstream media organization driven by social purpose, the nonprofit TED offers some unique insights on tapping into the power of media to both broadly spread knowledge and to connect with the energy of a passionate community. Join us for a conversation with TED curator Chris Anderson and June Cohen, Executive Producer of TED Media, as they reveal the vision that drives TED, plans for expansion in the future and the variety of ways TED is working with foundations to meet shared objectives.

Explore

  • How the original vision for TED has evolved and how it today reflects curator Chris Anderson’s philanthropic goals and the public interest
  • How TED balances multiple roles as media maker, content maker and self distributor
  • Insights into TED’s successful global crowdsourcing effort to translate TED Talks into 98 languages (and counting)
  • Lessons learned with TED’s philosophy of radical openness, which has driven the free distribution of the talks on TED.com, the grassroots crowdsourcing of the Open Translation Project and the global viral expansion of the brand with TEDx
  • Best practices for how TED works closely with foundations such as The Gates Foundation, the Knight Foundation and the Robin Hood Foundation.
