PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The statistics are alarming. 1 out of every 6 American women – and 1 out of every 33 men - has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her/his lifetime. An estimated 15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12. What must be remembered is that these statistics represent a life-altering trauma in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
Sexual violence is a deep-rooted problem that knows no boundaries. It cuts across age, race, ethnicity, gender, and class. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. said, “There is no crime, other than murder, which is more destructive or traumatic to the victim.” Yet despite the alarming prevalence of sexual violence in all strata of American society, sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes in the United States and the costliest to the victim.
In New York City, community-based organizations are taking the lead in developing innovative services and sexual violence prevention strategies to make their neighborhoods and constituencies safer, and to ultimately reduce the incidence of sexual violence through primary research, targeted interventions, education, advocacy and community mobilization.
The briefing will feature presentations by nonprofit organizations working on the front lines of sexual violence intervention and prevention. Grantmakers will learn about model programs and approaches developed by New York City Anti-Violence Project, New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault, and RightRides for Women’s Safety.
The month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence (focusing on sexual assault and rape) and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.
