As the non-profit partner to the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) since 1982, the Fund for Public Schools has secured investment from foundations, businesses, and individuals, raising more than $532 million for the City's approximately 1,800 schools and 1.1 million students.

As The Fund’s Chief Executive Officer, Julie L. Shapiro is responsible for fostering public-private partnerships with the New York City business and non-profit communities, and securing critical investments for key educational priorities to support the administration’s Equity and Excellence for All agenda. Stephen Cockrell has recently joined The Fund as Chief Strategy Officer to bolster partnerships and provide strategic leadership.

Both Julie and Stephen will join the NYC Youth and Education Funders to discuss The Fund's priorities for the months ahead. When the pandemic began to unfold in March, The Fund quickly pivoted to launch the NYC Schools COVID-19 Response Effort in partnership with the NYC DOE and donors to identify and address the greatest emerging needs. Since then, The Fund has raised more than $21 million for emergency needs and innovative solutions. The Fund continues to support the City’s recovery and relief efforts by mobilizing additional philanthropic resources and establishing partnerships to support the academic and social-emotional needs of every student, while prioritizing the specific needs of the City’s most vulnerable student populations, such as students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and students in temporary housing. Additional areas of focus are college and career readiness, early literacy, STEM, and the Arts, as well as mobilizing investments to support the City’s Equity and Excellence agenda.
