Program Associate, Power

The Foundation is seeking a Program Associate (PA) to join the Foundation’s Power team. The PA will contribute to the development and execution of a multi-year initiative to bring electricity to households and businesses without access. The PA will also provide support to the broader strategy development and on-going projects, including through research, grant management and development of key stakeholder convenings.  In particular, the role will support the development and execution of a strategy to leverage advanced data analytics to relieve bottlenecks and accelerate access to electricity. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):

Contribute to the development of the Power team’s overall strategy and project management

  • Support the Power team’s strategy process, through engagement with outside experts, advisors and consultants, preparation of communications and materials, and organization of key stakeholder convenings and engagements
  • Research and frame strategic choices, identifying key tensions or gaps that need to be resolved
  • Work with the Power team’s Senior Associate Director and Associate Director in New York on the management of a portfolio of grants within the Power initiative, which includes understanding the capacity and effectiveness of potential grantees, designing and writing grant memos and other key documents, maintaining grantee relationships, participating in site visits and other monitoring activities
  • Produce internal reports, quarterly reviews and internal and external communications as needed

Develop the Power team’s capacity to leverage advanced analytics for energy access  

  • Monitor and manage recently launched multi-year grant to build a Center around predictive analytics for energy demand in emerging countries: provide input on methodology and design of key tools, identify and help resolve issues, support linkages to other Power team grantees and work, coordinate key meetings, track and review outputs and deliverables
  • Collaborate with existing Power grantees to develop strategies to incorporate and leverage data in their work, including teams at ‘Smart Power India’, ‘Smart Power Myanmar’ and the CrossBoundary ‘Innovation Lab’
  • Monitor and surface new developments, innovations and trends in the space, including key research, policy movements, and important upcoming events; propose new ideas and implement them through support to existing grantees, new grant-making, or convening and stakeholder engagement
  • Act as a point of contact between the Power team and the Foundation’s Data and Technology team, ensuring coordination and optimization of various efforts
  • Provide technical advice on data, research methodologies and outputs to team members as needed
  • Produce and commission analytical products including data visualizations and statistical reports to further the Power team’s work

Supervision Received:

The Program Associate will report to the Senior Associate Director responsible for strategy and data

Supervision Exercised:

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications & Skills:

Technical qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a relevant field of study
  • At least 3 years work experience in a related capacity (e.g. data analytics, energy systems, strategy)
  • Experience working with advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence and understanding of key methodologies and approaches
  • Experience using data visualization platforms such as Tableau or Power BI; Demonstrated ability to learn new technical tools and approaches as needed
  • Familiarity with energy systems (e.g. utilities, renewable energy) a plus, but not required
  • Demonstrated interest in working to improve the lives of others
