Summary

Stonewall Community Foundation, a prolific funder of LGBTQ causes, is seeking an inventive, energetic, skillful, and passionate fundraiser to lead major gifts development. This newly created Major Gifts Officer position will be responsible for generating and executing strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, and recognize donors with the capacity to give $5,000 or more annually. With the Executive Director, the MGO will set ambitious goals for that work and ensure those are meaningfully supported by annual expenditures, planning, and staff and Board activities. To ensure operational continuity, MGO duties will often link to various functions of program, communications, and finance staff. Just ahead of our 30th anniversary in 2020, this is an exciting moment to join the Stonewall team and be part of a concerted effort to grow and define the trajectory of this vital LGBTQ nonprofit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Building out and directly stewarding a portfolio of 75+ major donor prospects
  • Defining strategies to achieve Stonewall’s overarching revenue goals through major gifts
  • Designing and managing programs and campaigns that produce individual gifts of $5,000
  • Enlisting and supporting board members, donors, and volunteer fundraising leadership, including Host Committees, to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors
  • Developing strategy memos and scripts to prepare the Executive Director, board members, and volunteer fundraising leadership to make successful major gifts asks
  • Managing the creation and assignment of major donor portfolios to the Executive Director and Board, and providing ready support in the annual stewardship of those relationships
  • Managing identification, acquisition, and stewardship of donors to our Fund Partner Program, which houses donor-advised, field of interest, scholarship, and other grantmaking funds
  • Assisting with the conception, logistics, and planning of special events, including Stonewall’s annual gala, especially where such tasks relate to or advance the securing of major gifts
  • Collaborating with other staff to create materials, including solicitation letters, proposals, and donor recognition pieces, that increase our fundraising potential and efficacy
  • Partnering to maintain an organized system for donor stewardship by updating donor records, contact reports, and tasks, as appropriate (note: the MGO is not responsible for gift entry)

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate for this role will have at least seven years’ progressively responsible experience in nonprofit development, including five years of direct experience crafting successful major donor acquisition strategies and securing major gifts. They should likewise have a practiced understanding of how individual and major donor giving exist alongside and complement an effective corporate and institutional giving praxis. Demonstrable knowledge of fundraising analytics, metrics, and reporting methodologies is a must, as are a high level of discretion and an ethical approach to fundraising. Proficiency in database management, Microsoft Office Suite, and donor research is also a must.

The ideal candidate is able to speak fluently and with confidence on social issues and policy affecting LGBTQ people and has a proven ability to influence donors and philanthropic leaders. They will have excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, including compelling storytelling; the ability to work independently and collaboratively; and facility building relationships with people of diverse backgrounds.

Candidates with bachelor’s degrees are preferred. In the absence of a bachelor’s degree, applicants must have a solid record of at least 10 years’ experience working full-time in nonprofits and/or fields closely related to this position.

Corporate fundraising, planned giving, and supervisory experience a plus.

Salary and Benefits

This position is full-time and exempt at 40 hours a week, with occasional evening and weekend work. Salary will be $80K+ and commensurate with experience.
